ITOC FORUM NOTES
ITP ü ITPs need to bring in more information re: Black, Spanish, Vietnamese, etc cultures, religions, beliefs, behaviors, etc to enhance and better understand “color” ethic groups. ü What can be added or incorporated into out ITPs? Asian, Native American, Afro American, Middle Eastern, South Asian, Hispanic… ü In NM, we have a lot of students from diverse heritage/background take the earlier courses ( ASL I/II), but they don’t enter the ITP or they do finish but they don’t stay in the profession. I’d like to see mentoring (ideally by people of color/Deaf/HH) ü I’d like to see opportunities for students to travel and be involved with organizations like NAOBI, Inter Deaf Council, etc. ü Where are Students of Color? I know 1 Native American woman who has graduated and she is now waiting tables. Other Cultures ü New England South Asian Deaf Association (NESADA) and the Metro South Asian Deaf Association (MSADA) woul dlike to have ASL. Spoken English/Other Language (Arabic, Pubaii, Hindu) for religious gathering and communicate with hearing South Asians. ü Clear list of resources and access to websites of the different ethic groups. ü If you are planning something for the next conference, depending on how much time you have- have at least 2 or 3 slots that focus on different aspects of multicultural issues. Include a place and time where people can share and work on their own experiences. ü Identify the salient multicultural issues that affect diversity; Native Americans, Hispanics, etc.
VIEWS ü Career information placed at High School and Jr. High School levels. ü Collaborate on article for VIEWS on anti-white supremacy (the historical significance of white supremacy’s affects on the profession of interpreting. ü More word of mouth around own community. Use VIEWS more often. ü I maybe could work on a VIEWS article. ü See more diverse pictures in the VIEWS
Recruitment ü Looking to recruit more Interpreters to our statewide contract list, as well as staff interpreters. ü Recruitment of Instructors from ITOC background ü Recruitment of Students of Color. ü Take a proactive approach to greeting/inviting Persons Of Color. Diverse inviting diverse. $$/ Fundraising: ü Solicit funds from local Hispanic organizations (Latino Chamber of Commerse, Hispanic Media, etc) ü Have scholarships or grants for under-represented groups to attend ITPs. I.E. Fed$ for Native Americans to get B.S in Interpreting.
Presenters: ü PRESENTER: Trenda Smith , CT. Black woman runs an agency (Unique Hands). She could possibly present on business practices. She is currently living in Texas . RID member. ü ITOC Speakers Bureau ü Diverse speakers, diverse topics (not just multi-culturaled issues) speakers whoa re knowledgeable no many topics who are/ can be role models. Diverse sign models
Workshops: ü Endorse/denounce signs that are racially biased- take a stand!! ü We would like to see and help more anti-racism, anti-oppression workshops regionally and nationally. ü “street” jargon ü How to encourage people of color to become interpreters. ü Workshop on experiences of Interpreters and Deaf People of Color in the white world ü White Interpreters to be mentored by Interpreters of Color as to their culture. ü Provide a workshop/panel with both Deaf people of color and Interpreters of color to share their experiences in an undiversified enviroment woul dbe great at the National RID conference in SF.
Connections: ü Connection with Interpreter organizations NAOBI, Mano a Mano, etc ü ITOC could work collaborate with spoken language interpreters to pull terps within the communities. ü ITOC developing relationships and collaborations with Deaf Association with National Boards. (IDC, NADC, NBDA, National Hispanic, etc) since they would know more on where and how to recruit interpreters of color. ü ITOC reps could get in touch with the ITPs, ASL classes. etc in their region and expose them to ITOC.
Attitudes: ü Maintain attitude of non-color ü Labels do not represent everyone! Ex: Latino“ PR, Cuba , TexMEx, etc.?? ü Stereotypes ü RID needs to be more diverse recognize the uniqueness of all. More visibility of black interpreters. I want to see Interpreters like me. ü Encourage RID to do a more personal approach esp. in calls for conference terps
Questions/Concerns: ü How do I maintain my dignity when people look at me & discount me? I being judged! ü We need heroes who look like me. ( mentors, role models) ü We need to be the better dressed but we are raising the bar. ü If you won’t sit next to me at a conference, then why should I interpret & give presentation there? ü Don’t think all non-colors are color-blind. Don’t judge them get to know them. ü From a Deaf perspective, I woul dlike to see more interpreter od color since the Deaf community is becoming more diverse. It would be great to have some interpreters have some knowledge in some of the cultures we practice these days.
