ITOC Forum (minutes).

Spring 2004

ITOC representaive sent to NAOBI. Read her experience.
RID has announced their Spanish language interpreting policy for the 2005 “Bridging Cultures”
conference in San Antonio, TX.  The policy proposes to reverse a precedence and not provide Spanish
language interpreting for conference participants.

Thank you to all ITOC/RID members who supported the many efforts including letter writing and a
petition. There has been a lot of activity within the RID membership , as well as supporting organizations
such as Mano a Mano, in opposition to this policy.  See ITOC Speaks Out to see their letters.

*A special group has been formed to address the needs of the Spanish Speaking conference
participants who need to request interpretation. They will work with RID to provide quality access.

The response letter from ITOC to Angela Jones, RID President, is posted at
Letter from Your Chair.

From Angela Jones: "Please share with those who are signing that the RID Board regrets the decision to
accept the 2005 RID Conference Spanish Interpretation Policy.  It is not, nor was not, our intention to be
oppressive or seemingly against diversity.  We acknowledge that we did not think this decision through
as well as we should have and are taking corrective action. We are going to change the policy and
appreciate the feedback and concerns that have been voiced. "
